Shine STIM: Research

As part of the tSCS programme, we collect clinical and outcome data to monitor progress, evaluate the service, and contribute to the growing evidence base for tSCS in children and young people with spina bifida.

Findings from Shine's service evaluation have been presented at several national and international events, including conferences for the Society for Research into Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida (SRHSB), British Paediatric Neurosurgery Group (BPNG), ERIC – the Children’s Bladder and Bowels Charity, and the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IFSBH). Presenting our work helps to raise awareness of this emerging approach and share learning with clinicians and researchers. We are currently preparing the service evaluation for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Shine is also actively involved in training and supporting healthcare professionals interested in delivering tSCS, helping to develop expertise, promote safe practice, and improve access to this intervention for more children and families in the future.

In September 2026 as a commitment to increasing access to this innovative treatment, Shine supported 20 therapists to be trained in Level 1 NISE-Stim and will continue to support them after the course. Shine's aim is that tSCS is available within NHS services across the country and have already supported NHS teams in writing business cases and navigating embedding this into their service offer.
