Shine member Maryam, celebrates 60 years of the charity that gave her family hope

A 10-year-old girl, Maryam, whose family turned to Peterborough-based charity, Shine, following a prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida and hydrocephalus helped mark the charity's 60th anniversary celebrations in Peterborough by cutting the anniversary cake.  

Maryam was also delighted to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough, and got to try on the mayoral chains! 

Maryam’s Mum, Natalia, shared the impact the charity has had on her family after receiving a prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. 

"When I first contacted Shine during my pregnancy, they were warm, kind and incredibly supportive. They didn't pretend life would always be easy, but they gave me something I desperately needed at that moment: hope. 

Shine helped me understand that my daughter's life would not be defined by her disabilities. They helped me prepare for the future instead of being terrified of it. 

Today, Maryam attends a mainstream school, loves swimming and singing, and enjoys life to the full. Shine has been there for us every step of the way, and I know they will continue to be there whenever we need advice, information or support." 

The event celebrated six decades of supporting people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, including 279 people in Cambridgeshire, while recognising the volunteers, supporters, fundraisers, partners and staff who make that work possible. 

Shine CEO, Kate Steele said,  

"Maryam's story served as a powerful reminder of why Shine's work remains as important today as it was 60 years ago." 

While the anniversary celebrated 60 years of Shine supporting people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus to navigate life's challenges and opportunities, it also provided a chance to look forward. The charity is determined to build on its legacy, ensuring future generations have access to the specialist support, information and advocacy they need to thrive.
